Types of Software Project Plan

All software project plan in an organisation follows certain standards like IEEE 1058.1. The following are different types of software project plan which are as follows:

Software Project Plan

Schedule Management Plan

This plan is for ensuring that the project gets completed on time. It involves-

  • Factors which can affect the schedule.
  • Methodology that will be used to manage the schedule.
  • The extent to which some known factors can potentially affect the schedule.
  • The extent to which some known factors can potentially affect the schedule.
  • Method by which schedule changes are documented, communicated and controlled.

Cost Management Plan

This plan ensures that the project is completed within the specified budget. It also specifies various constraints on the budget. Summarizing this plan included the following:-

  • Tools or methodology used to manage the budget.
  • Factors which can result in changes in budget.
  • The extent to which these factors can affect the budget.
  • Methods for documenting, communicating and controlling the changes.

Quality Management Plan

The quality management plan concerns both the process as well as project quality. It specifies the quality standards which are integral to the project and methods and resources for ensuring compliance(accordingly) with these standards. This plan includes:-

  • A description of factors which can likely cause deviation from the specified quality standards.
  • The extent to which changes occurring in project quality will affect the project.
  • How such changes can be identified.
  • How these changes will be documented, communicated and controlled

Staffing Management Plan

This plan specifies the estimation of staff or personal or human resource requirements. It should include:-

  • An estimated required skill levels of the personal staff.
  • The quality attributes of the human resources.
  • It also includes training requirements for the staff.

Risk Management Plan

This plan specifies the measures for managing the risk factors associated with the project as well as identifying all the possible risk factors as well as their impact. In addition it includes the following:-

  • The mechanism for tracking various risk factors like technological risk, contractual risk as well as risks arising due to size and complexity of the project.
  • The degree to which all identified risks can affect the project.
  • How the changes resulting from the risks can be manages.
  • How the changes will be documented, communicated and controlled.

Communication Management Plan

This plan specifies the methods for managing the communications related to the project. It defines the reporting mechanisms, report formats, information flows, tools and technique used for monitoring and controlling. It includes the following:-

  • The extent to which the communication failures can affect the project.
  • How the changes resulting from communication failures can be identifies.
  • Methods by which the resulting changes can be communicated and controlled.
